The staff were exceptionally polite and accommodating, and the place was very clean. Hotel Caldora has a strong old-fashioned character in the picturesque mountain town of Rocca di Mezzo, up in the Abruzzo mountains. The cheap-looking wood paneling, bright orange sheets and curtains, and floral bathroom tiles give it a surprisingly charming 70s or 80s feel. It could use a major renovation, though its historic character might be worth keeping. Some details made the stay less comfortable: the towels were huge and thick like tablecloths, the pillows were flat, and the heater stayed on constantly with no clear controls. The walls and door were so thin we could hear our neighbors at night and whenever someone used the bathroom. At €150 a night it felt expensive, though peak ski season and weekend demand made the rate understandable. It’s a distinctive mix of nostalgia and a clean, welcoming setting.

The staff were very friendly, and the bed was comfortable. The shower worked well too, and the rooms are generally quiet. It’s a simple, decent hotel, though clearly old and due for some renovations. Breakfast is alright for what you pay, but the fruit was canned and past its date, visibly fizzy. That really isn’t acceptable, as someone could get sick. Apart from that one problem, I don’t have much else to say. You get what you pay for, and it’s good enough.

The location was very good and the hotel was clean. But it was far too noisy on the floors at night, and management didn’t do anything to control it. I paid 140 euros a night, which felt overpriced. Breakfast was the poorest I’ve ever seen.
