If you want to get a real sense of the Roman Empire’s history, Domus Aurea is a visit worth making. Being there and moving through its layers of history felt educational, genuine, and memorable. It’s much more than a place to take Instagram pictures, it’s a chance to connect with another time. Highly recommended.
One of the best parts of my Rome trip was seeing the frescoes and floors from Nero’s time while touring the active excavation at Nero's Palace. The VR experience also helped us picture how the palace may have looked around 68 AD. It’s a real hidden gem. Tours run only about three days a week, as of February 2026, and spaces are limited, so I’d recommend booking tickets ahead.
Our guide’s passion made the tour even better, and the guided parts gave the visit much more depth. Domus Aurea is an amazing place to walk through, with its history and beautifully preserved spaces giving you the feeling of stepping into ancient Rome. The artistry and architecture are stunning, and you can sense the scale and ambition of what Emperor Nero created. It’s fascinating to learn how innovative it was for its time. If you’re into history, art, or architecture, it’s a must-see, and one of the most fascinating places I’ve visited.
The tour inside Domus Aurea was great, and the virtual reality section was amazing. I’d recommend visiting, but I wouldn’t buy through Empireverse. Their email said to look for someone carrying an Empire Tour flag. The day before, they moved our tour to 2 pm. We got to the meeting point at 1:30, but nobody with a flag was there. At 2, we called Empireverse and left a message, then tried again. Around 2:10, when we were about to give up and leave, someone called from CSI tours and said they’d wave so we could spot them. We eventually found our guide and confirmed she had our names, but she still had no flag to help anyone find her. She started calling the other guests because nobody could locate her either. Once we reached Domus Aurea and were handed over to the tour guide, the visit itself was great.
This rediscovered temple of Nero was one of my highlights here. There’s still excavation going on and tickets are scarce, so book well ahead. On weekends, archaeologists lead the tours. They know a lot and answer questions well. The explanations give you a good picture of what the inside might have looked like, and the VR experience is pretty cool, included with the tour.
