When we arrived at night, the room had ants all over the floor. The hotel’s only offer was to charge us extra for a superior room, or let us sleep there and have it cleaned the next day. We didn’t think that was acceptable when we’d paid for a room in proper condition. We found another hotel for that night. There, our room wasn’t ready because of a misunderstanding, but they gave us a superior room at the same price without any problem. That’s what we expected from a four-star hotel. We’d already paid for three nights at Il campo Marzio, so we went back the next day to see if they had another room. They gave us the same room, still with the ants. We asked for a full refund and they agreed, but said we’d need to call their headquarters the following week. We couldn’t reach anyone by phone. By email, they said they’d look into the issue and get back to us. We sent several more emails and never heard from them again. Our bank eventually canceled the payment and returned our money. The hotel didn’t refund us. The room was very low quality, and the response was unprofessional. I don’t consider this a four-star hotel. We also informed the EU and Italian authorities about what we believe was fraud.

The room looked nothing like the description or photos, but the bedbugs were the worst part. After our first night, we were covered in bites, and the beds were crawling with them. We told reception, but they had no other room available. The only choice they gave us was to stay in that same bed, so we booked somewhere else to sleep, somewhere that wasn’t infested. I spent two days trying to get a refund for the nights we still had booked. The “manager” wouldn’t respond, and staff said there was nothing they could do except contact us when the manager returned. We never heard a word from them. Stay away. It was easily our worst experience, and I wouldn’t book here.

They put us in another hotel in the same chain on the second day, saying this one was closing. That was the one thing that really spoiled my stay. Before that, I’d found the rooms in this historic building beautiful, cozy, and quiet. The service was generally good, and breakfast was good too. The location is central and close to Plaza España, though the hotel is a little hidden. I was also put off by the prices for minibar items, even water and toilet paper from Carrefour, which they charged for as if they were gold. If you want a quiet, cozy place in a central location, this could suit you.

Money was taken from our room safe. The staff didn’t handle the problem professionally, and ignored it instead of resolving it. I wouldn’t trust this hotel. If your money, documents, and peace of mind matter to you, don’t stay at Il Campo Marzio Hotel in Rome.

The location was great, and the staff were nice, but the hotel was a letdown. The photos and the actual place were completely different, and we couldn’t figure out where to check in because we expected a separate hotel entrance and lobby. The bar serves as the lobby. Our room was tucked on the second floor of a very damp, dark building. Inside was better, with something like an apartment layout: three rooms and a shared area. There were things in the shared-space drawers that made it seem like someone lived there. We also had people try to enter our room late at night because the room numbers on the doorframes were so tiny and confusing. The rooms were clean, but there was visible black mold. The website says they provide an airport shuttle or car. When I asked, they said they could “organize a car to come get us,” which just meant calling a taxi or Uber.
