The bedbugs were the worst part. They started appearing all over the room and beds, and when we called reception, nobody answered at first. Someone called back after a few minutes and said it was too late to move us, and that we could sort it out the next day. They didn’t seem concerned about whether we had anywhere to sleep. We asked for a refund and were told no. The following day they moved us to a room in another building, but it wasn’t ready when we got there. He said he’d refund one night, then returned only part of it. He was rude and said he didn’t speak English. The room had smelled of tobacco from the start, and the hotel setup, run by the “white vatican,” felt strange. It was somewhat bearable because most things looked clean, aside from a few stains on the sheets.

This place is not a hotel. I booked thinking it was one, but found a three-bedroom apartment instead. At 1:00 AM I collected the key from one apartment, then had to walk 10 minutes to sleep in another. The room there was in awful shape and looked nothing like the photos of the room I booked on Booking.com. The room was filthy, the sheets had holes, the bathroom was dirty, and the equipment was disgusting and dangerous. I have photos. My wife and I were scratching all week from the dirty sheets, towels, and general filth. Hot water took patience, or luck. Fortunately, Rome was warm. I expected the cleaning lady to come the next day, but she didn’t show. She finally came on the second day after I complained to Booking.com customer service. She replaced the ancient hairdryer, and that was all. There was no cleaning or other service, just two small sachets of shower gel for the entire week. The trash wasn’t taken out once. There are more photos in my Google review. I usually find something positive even in a terrible situation, but I can’t say anything good about the Vatican Heart. It’s the worst I’ve ever seen.
