The Inn at the Spanish Steps

Breakfast set the tone for our days, especially thanks to Alescia, who was warm and helpful. The staff were friendly throughout. Our room was clean and comfortable, nothing extraordinary, but perfectly fine. And with the hotel right by the Spanish Steps, getting around Rome was so easy. We were a little unsure about the multiple buildings at first, but it worked out and gave the place a charming boutique feel.

We loved the Suite views and were sorry to leave. The staff were sweet and accommodating, including the friendly, personable breakfast attendant. Check-in was easy: we left our bags with the staff and had a welcome drink in the rooftop lounge. The rooms are in lovely old buildings spread across several blocks, which makes sense in a neighborhood that feels very old by American standards. We highly recommend the property.

The location near the Spanish Steps was excellent, and Rome itself was magical. But for over $6,500 USD for three nights in two suites on a family trip, we expected a luxury stay, and this fell well short. One practical issue is that the suites are in a separate building several blocks from the main hotel. That should be made clearer when booking, especially for anyone with mobility or back problems. The elevator also stops between floors, so there are half flights of stairs to manage even after riding it. We had a blanket from the closet with visible blood on both sides and black hairs. Housekeeping replaced it promptly, but it shouldn't happen at a property marketed as luxury. The makeup mirror light was reported more than once and never fixed. We also requested ice around 4 PM, but it never came. Later we were told there was none because the bar had closed. The suite lock repeatedly failed. Maintenance spent nearly an hour replacing batteries and working on the mechanism, but when we returned close to midnight, it failed again. We were locked out for about 30 minutes while staff tried to get us in. The next morning, when we hoped to rest before sightseeing, maintenance came back to work on it, and returned again later that day. With repairs going on, it was hard to use the suite comfortably. After we emailed management a detailed account, their reply said the door was fixed “immediately” and the room was “spotless.” That doesn't match what we experienced. Problems can happen in historic buildings, but how a hotel acknowledges and resolves them matters. Rome was unforgettable, though this stay didn't meet the standard we expected for premium suite rates.

The hotel has plenty of steps, though there is an elevator. Rooms were large and nice, and the staff were fabulous and very kind. Its rooftop bar is a lovely spot for a glass of wine. Best of all, the location puts you right in the middle of the city.
