La Soffitta di Santa Prassede

Just a few steps from Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, I found this lovely surprise. The interior is beautiful, though the entrance sits among other buildings and you could walk right past without realizing there’s a full basilica inside. Definitely worth a visit.

The mosaics are the main reason I’d visit Santa Prassede. Some are the church’s oldest features, dating to around 820, and they stand out among the beautiful floor, frescoes, and ornate coffered ceiling. The interior reflects several renovations over the centuries, so it brings together different styles. The church dates back to the 9th century, when Pope Paschalis I built it. A semicircular crypt was dug beneath the apse, and he had Christian relics brought there from the catacombs for safekeeping. The exact site of the earlier home church is unknown. According to legend, Praxedis, the Latin form of Prassede, was the daughter of a Roman senator who set up a home church while Christians were being persecuted. She hid Christians there and, when needed, buried them in the city’s catacombs. You enter through an unassuming door marked "Basilica di S.Prassede." Go in and let those mosaics take you by surprise.

Santa Prassede has a quiet, almost mystical feel, and stepping inside feels like going back to early medieval Rome. Its mosaics, spiritual atmosphere, and Christian history make it a memorable place for anyone interested in sacred art or history. The church is dedicated to Saint Praxedes, daughter of the Roman senator Pudens and sister of Saint Pudentiana. Both are linked with the city’s earliest Christian community. Built in the 9th century under Pope Paschal I, it stands just steps from the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. Behind the modest exterior, Byzantine mosaics fill the interior. In the apse, Christ in Glory appears among saints and angels in gold and light, a symbol of faith’s triumph. The best-known spot is the Chapel of Saint Zeno, sometimes called the “Medieval Sistine Chapel.” Its small oratory is covered in glittering mosaics of Christ, the Virgin, saints, and Pope Paschal I. He has a square halo, a sign that he was still alive when the mosaic was made. A side chapel also holds a relic of the Column of the Flagellation, brought from Jerusalem.

Santa Prassede is a peaceful, deeply spiritual place where you can take in its history and beauty without crowds. It’s rich in relics and offers a glimpse of early Christian Rome. The 9th-century golden mosaics are stunning, especially in the apse and Cappella di San Zenone, often known as the “Garden of Paradise.” It’s an extraordinary, often overlooked example of early medieval Carolingian art in Rome, and a must-see if you’re interested in art, history, or sacred spaces.
