We arrived after traveling all night and had to wait until 2 p.m. to check in. The room was around 90°F when we got in, with the air conditioning off. It took us two hours to figure out there was a remote to turn it on. Then we tried to shower and found only ice-cold water, so we went without a shower that first day. Someone was finally sent the next day, after endless WhatsApp messages. On day four, after sightseeing all day in 100°F heat, we got back at 6 p.m. and couldn't enter the building because the access panel wasn't working. All our belongings, passports, and luggage were locked in the room. Customer service just said sorry and told us to come back tomorrow. Seriously? The building itself also looked like it belonged in a Mad Max movie, with what looked like decorative ghetto art on the front. This business was a nightmare.
Our room wasn't ready until after 6 p.m., even though it was supposed to be available from 3, so we had to wander around the city with our luggage. The room was cold, and we couldn't adjust the temperature because the thermostat was locked. The hotline said no one could help until the next day during maid service hours, leaving us cold for half the stay. The trouble started at arrival: we were told the reservation had been canceled the day before and supposedly refunded, and that we should contact Booking with questions. After we reported it to Booking, the hotel called back two hours later saying they would somehow find us a room, but the money had not been refunded. The room they offered was in a completely different location and didn't work for us. We lost a lot of time traveling around and trying to sort it out. The whole thing was frustrating and I strongly advise against staying here.
After I first got in, the electronic lock stopped working. My family, including two minors, and I were left in the hallway all night, while our luggage and documents stayed locked inside. Nobody from customer service could help. The only person who answered was a German employee, and they couldn't fix anything. The following day, I had to find and pay a specialized locksmith to open the door myself. I kept reminding customer service during the rest of our stay, but got no help. We were left entirely on our own.
The student quarter is well worth exploring if you want to see local life without the tourist scene. There are hardly any tourists, and the graffiti covered buildings have their own character. When the shops open, you can even find a jeweler behind one of the most intimidating looking doors. It's a really interesting area, and we'd come back. For six people, the place was a great fit: comfortable beds, three bathrooms, and a tidy room with everything we needed. It's a little out of the way, and street noise comes through the windows, so earplugs are a good idea. After a day in Rome, though, we were tired enough to sleep.
The building and one-bedroom apartment were nice, and the after-sales service was exemplary. The company was always friendly on WhatsApp, but the fixes they suggested didn't solve the problem. A gas boiler in the bedroom made noise all night, apparently because of some programming defect or something, and it couldn't be turned off. I barely slept. It's a good place to stay, but that noisy boiler is a real shame.
