The room was clean and quiet, and breakfast was good. Our two-day stay at Martius Private Suites was very pleasant, and those things didn’t affect my rating. The billing did. We booked online and provided my card to guarantee the reservation. The hotel charged the stay to it three days before arrival, as agreed. At checkout I said they could charge the City Tourist Tax (€7.50 per person per night) to the card on file, and they said they’d email a final invoice. We left thinking all was well. A few days later, the charges looked high. They’d been processed in dollars instead of euros, so I couldn’t tell the actual bill, and no invoice had arrived. I emailed to ask why they billed in dollars, since the exchange rate looked very unfavorable. They said I had authorized dollar processing at check-in, without my knowledge, and sent an invoice that included bottled water. We know room water often costs extra, so we bought our own, €2.50 for a 1.5 litre bottle a few minutes away, and never touched theirs. My card has no foreign currency transaction fee, unlike the 2.5% many cards charge, so the total was noticeably more than just an unfavorable exchange rate. I wrote again to say we hadn’t used the water and that the main Visa charge had already gone through before I arrived, so they didn’t have my authorization to process it in dollars before doing so. Their reply said their “payment system automatically processes transactions in the cardholder's domestic currency when a foreign card is used,” and that they’d reverse the water charge “as a gesture of goodwill.” It’s been a month since the stay, and that charge still hasn’t been reversed. I can’t help wondering whether they billed us in dollars to bury a few extra euros in the bill without most people noticing. It was also a little hard to find the entrance when we arrived. We couldn’t see any street signage. A large wooden gate was closed, but there’s a panel beside it with buttons for each tenant, and one is labeled Martius Suites. Pressing it unlocks the gate to the building’s central courtyard, then it’s easy to find the hotel. Taxi drop-off and pickup were awkward too. It’s a one-way street with nowhere for taxis to pull over, so they often block traffic when stopping. Drop-offs have to be quick, and for pickup the taxi asked us to wait out on the street because it couldn’t stop at the entrance.

The bar had a great atmosphere, and all the staff were amazing, from the front desk to housekeeping and the bar. We were very happy with our stay. Before we arrived, the staff were great about answering emails and gave us all the information we wanted. They arranged a private airport transfer and later organized a taxi to the port, which worked perfectly. On arrival we got a complimentary upgrade to the presidential spa suite. The suites are large, nicely decorated, with very high, impressive ceilings. The hotel is in a perfect area, fairly quiet and within a short walk of all the main sights. Amazing hotel!

The location is phenomenal. There’s a famous gelato place right next door, and I got gelato there three days in a row. The Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain were walkable, and maybe the Colosseum too, though I had mobility issues during the trip. The clean, modern room had enough space for luggage and a Nespresso machine, which was a plus. The front desk staff were friendly and polite. Still, I pay for a hotel bed so I can sleep, and this place didn’t deliver that. We were on the first floor, with suites above us, and both nights we heard very loud footsteps and running upstairs. Even someone simply walking across the floor was loud. It kept me up despite wearing earplugs, which don’t help much with bass sounds. I called the front office twice, but it didn’t stop until 2:30am. The breakfast was one of the worst we’ve had. It included some pastries, yogurt, granola, which they brought out right away, not fresh orange juice, and a hot drink. Eggs and bacon cost extra. We paid $330 per night for a standard room on Friday and Saturday in early November. This was the last stop on our 28-day Italy vacation, and for two stars, the noise made this stay a letdown.

Manuel’s cocktails and the way he treated us made our honeymoon stay at Martius Private Suites especially memorable. He was kind, welcoming, knew his stuff, and made fantastic drinks. We’ll be back in Rome and would happily stay here again to see him and have those cocktails. Our suite was roomy and comfortable, with gorgeous high ceilings, and the location was great too, about a four-minute walk from the Pantheon and surrounded by good restaurants.

Thoughtfully equipped rooms and impeccable staff, all in a beautifully designed hotel. It’s a fabulous choice if you want to be near Rome’s main sights. Highly recommended.
