We feel completely cheated by what seemed like a scam. This place is nowhere near luxury. Even the coffee maker, kettle, and complimentary items were rubbish. The hotel itself is old and tired, our room had mould, and for two of the four nights there was a raw sewage smell. We chose the large round red room for four nights because we wanted space. The bed was comfortable, but that was about the only good thing. The air conditioning struggled all night to bring the temperature down from 25 to 22, then had to run loudly and constantly to hold it there. The shower walls were mouldy, the toilet seat was a health hazard, there were holes in the floor, and there was nowhere to put our things unless we wanted to leave suitcases in the old, unpleasant tub in the room. A clothes rail had come away from its fitting and was dangerous. The shower and toilet are behind glass walls, so you can see your partner shower or use the toilet. That wasn't for us. If the photos load, they speak for themselves. The other rooms looked much smaller. When you arrive, you enter a shared area for MDM and other apartments. It smelled very strongly of sewage, and the odor went up the stairs to the second floor where MDM is, and into the corridor with the check-in desk. I mentioned it to the staff member checking us in. He said other guests had complained too, and suggested it happened when there were lots of people in the building. We went out and came back around 9pm, and the smell had reached our room. We messaged through Booking.com to say that if it still smelled the next day, MDM or Booking.com would need to move us elsewhere. There were no staff around then. The reply said it was a historic building and, to paraphrase, that this was to be expected, especially after rain. The next day there was no smell, and we were told they'd done something. But on the third day it came back. We let them know, but chose not to move with only two nights left, since it would have disrupted us and we were out most of the time anyway. I booked a historic hotel, not one that smells of raw sewage. This place is just nasty. Avoid it until it's been updated and the sewage smell is gone.

The building is older, but our room was spotless and pleasant. My wife and I were very happy with our recent stay at MDM Guesthouse. We could easily walk to Vatican City, and Ottaviano Metro station and plenty of local restaurants were convenient too. We hope to stay there again on our next trip to Rome.

The host was courteous and really friendly. Thanks for helping us enjoy Rome. We had a small bedroom with its own bathroom, and that bathroom made the hot Roman summer so much more comfortable. The bed was great for resting, and we could make coffee in the room in the evening, or tea if that's more your thing. There was air conditioning too, as shown in the picture.

Prati was a lovely area for us, quieter but still close to the Metro and Vatican. We also liked MeMe Cafe around the corner for breakfast and brunch. Paul at the desk and the man who cleans and looks after the rooms were incredibly helpful with questions and anything we needed. We moved to the larger end room, #31, and it was perfectly quiet. It had a sofa, a large bathroom with double sinks and a walk-in shower, plus a fridge and coffee and espresso makers. The building you enter is a bit run down, and you have to take a very old, antique elevator to the floor where the MDM rooms are. The rooms themselves are somewhat rustic and older, but we thought the price was fair, especially since MDM isn't a full-service hotel or facility. If you're after a comfortable, affordable room near the Vatican, I'd give it a try. My husband and I would come back at the price we paid. Thanks again, Paul, for your hospitality and helpful directions and recommendations! Lauren and Joe USA

The price and location are good, and the staff were nice. But pretty much everything else about the place was wrong. There's nothing luxurious here, so don't be fooled. It's a few rooms on the second floor of a building, not a hotel. I don't understand why Google lists it as four stars. I'd say two, or three at most. The basic room is tiny, and we paid an extra 30 euros for a better one that was at least usable for a night. The furniture was old, broken, and dirty. Water came out cold, and we had to wait ages for a weak flow of hot water. The kettle was full of sediment, the AC controller didn't work, and we had to adjust the temperature by pressing something on the ceiling. The toilet smelled bad too. I'd avoid this place.
