The room was fine, and the location was perfect for wandering around Rome on my own. After long walks, I'd pick up a beer at the little newsstand before going back into the hotel. Rome is a lovely city, just keep an eye out for hustlers and stay alert. At check-in, though, the man at reception insisted I hadn't paid even though I'd paid when I booked. Maybe it was a language mix-up, but he was cold and kept saying I needed to pay. I had my booking confirmation paperwork, but no phone data to pull up other proof and couldn't get onto the hotel WiFi. Eventually he stopped asking and gave me the room key.

It's an apartment hotel that's very central and clean, and it covers the basics, though it isn't especially attractive. After a 15-hour drive, the card machine didn't work. The friendly receptionist tried fixing it for 15 minutes, then took me to the office around the corner. These things happen, but he neither apologized nor thanked me for understanding. Breakfast is served at the cafe on the corner, which has a lovely, very unusual atmosphere that made me feel like I was in a film. They asked me for a hotel coupon, so I had to go back upstairs to get one. The receptionist lady seemed nervous and unsmiling, and treated me as if I were begging for money. She gave me a coupon for that day only and said I had to get another one before 9 each morning, even though breakfast could be eaten later. There must be a reason, but I don't understand it. Still, thanks for the adventure.

It's clean, centrally located, and cheap, and I found it quite suitable for the area. I think the poor reviews may come from people who aren't used to travelling in Europe.
