I booked this hostel because it was advertised as having air conditioning in the bedrooms, with no conditions mentioned. The room was around 28°C when I arrived. Only then was I told the air conditioning runs at night only, a restriction that hadn't been disclosed in the listing or booking information. During a Roman summer heatwave, that's when it's least useful. Guests booking air-conditioned rooms shouldn't find them boiling hot through the hottest part of the day. I told the manager that I have a medical condition that makes prolonged heat exposure hazardous to my health. I asked if the air conditioning in my room could be left on during the day for one day. He refused and told me to move to another hostel if I wasn't happy. I agreed to stay one night and leave the next day, but he kept contacting me for hours late into the night to argue, even after I said several times the matter was resolved and I didn't want to discuss it further. He also pressured me to cancel through Hostelworld so I couldn't leave a negative review after I said I planned to do so. At 11pm, as I was going to bed, he messaged asking me to come to reception to keep talking. I said no, it was 11pm and I was going to sleep, and that we could discuss anything else in the morning when I checked out as agreed. He ignored that boundary and came into my dorm room, to the bed where I was lying, around 11 p.m. to confront me aggressively about the dispute in my sleeping space. I told him repeatedly that his behavior was inappropriate, asked him to leave more than 10 times, and said I didn't want to discuss it. He kept harassing me and refused to leave. I can accept a disagreement handled professionally. I can't accept being repeatedly harassed after making it clear I want the conversation to end. I wouldn't stay here again and would caution others against it. ==== My response to the owners reply: The personal insults in your reply can speak for themselves. I did not "leave without paying." I left the outstanding balance in cash at reception, sent photos showing where I'd left it, and have WhatsApp messages from the manager saying payment wasn't required and asking me to collect the money. I wasn't rude to staff either. The manager came into my dorm at 11pm to continue a dispute I'd already said was resolved and didn't want to discuss. I repeatedly asked to be left alone. Finally, providing blankets to guests in an air-conditioned room is a normal part of running accommodation. I stand by my review.

"The Director" apparently does nightly check-ins by coming into the room after midnight without warning or even knocking. What a way to make guests comfortable! A wooden plank supporting the mattresses snapped from above and nearly blinded my friend. He got quite an adrenaline rush, while I ended up on the floor trying to avoid the flying pieces. They promptly fixed it by replacing one of the many planks that flexed. Great stay!

I booked an extra night through the hostel's own official website and the price was much cheaper. I had a pleasant stay at Youth Hostel Station. It's a practical choice for a short visit, with a convenient location for transport and getting around the city. The staff were kind and helpful, and the simple atmosphere felt welcoming. The room was decent and comfortable, with good value for money. It's not a luxury place.

The room itself was hard to enjoy: it smelled strongly of damp when I entered, had no windows and poor ventilation, and the bedding looked quite dirty. The bathroom was tiny, and I could hear people talking clearly through the walls. The upside was the location, just a two-minute walk from the subway, and the female staff member was very friendly. With an earlier booking and a bit more searching, I think there are better options in Rome.

Being able to use the kitchen might save you a little money, and the hostel is reasonably near the center. But the place felt far too expensive, and the interior reminded me of a prison. The kitchen noise carried through everything, making it hard to fall asleep. We also found a crazy number of bed bugs. That's not a tourist's responsibility: hostel staff need to inspect rooms properly, steam the beds, and replace mattresses. They said the hostel was tax-free, but apparently we still paid the tax.
