I've stayed here four times, with my husband and with guests on my small-group food & wine tours of Italy. Everyone's been as impressed as I am. My favourite upstairs room is Campanone, though Pattini is a smaller attic room with a lovely outlook. Downstairs, I can recommend Cappuccini and Monache. The beautifully restored old residence is run by the very friendly, helpful Sabrina, and Santarcangelo di Romagna, just inland from Rimini, makes a great base for exploring Romagna. It's also a food-lovers destination, with several very good restaurants. Ristorante Lazaroun, owned by the same family and underneath the accommodation, is one to try. Be sure to see the tufa caves below, where they age cheese and salumi. Breakfast isn't provided, but there's an Illy coffee machine in each room and most have kitchenettes. Nearby, Caffe Commercio opens early, while ViaSaffi opens later.

The staff were friendly and the flat was fairly clean, but the stay was very poor overall. We were given what I think was the worst apartment in the building, directly above the restaurant. The hotel doesn't show photos of this particular flat, so I've attached my own. The furniture, including the bed and armchairs, was very old and damaged. The bedroom looked shabby, and the decor felt random, like leftovers from other flats. There was no sound insulation. We could hear restaurant guests leaving a party at 1 a.m., as well as neighbors flushing the toilet or drying their hair in the morning. We also had no hot water in the morning, which other comments suggest is a recurring problem. At €110, this was unacceptable. I would never recommend the place.

We only stayed one night, but slept really well. The bed was super comfortable, and the room was clean and had everything we needed. It's right in the center, and the staff were super friendly and courteous. Highly recommended.

I'm reviewing the "Dei Cappuccini" apartment, right above the restaurant. The apartment has no real soundproofing, and the restaurant noise carries on at night. It's around midnight as I write this, and loud bangs and thumps are keeping me awake. This morning I could hear the neighbor use the bathroom, shower, flush the toilet, and talk on the phone. I'm here for work, and all this is causing me a lot of problems. It feels like people are constantly yelling and banging things around in the apartment. It's intolerable. There were no spare towels or extra blankets, and the TV is very dated and barely works. The bed was quite comfortable, and the apartment is spacious and right in the city center, but I definitely won't return. Highly not recommended.

The Platani residence is phenomenal, with cheerful, carefully chosen furnishings and a joyful view of the little park in front. The owners' restaurant makes the scene even livelier, and in my opinion its top-quality food is a must. The self-contained apartments are very spacious and meticulously looked after. They're just how you'd wish your own home could be. Santarcangelo itself has flower-filled windows, flowerbeds worthy of the Sanremo festival, and huge pedestrian streets paved in porphyry or cobblestones. It's the sort of place that seems made up for one of those light-hearted Italian comedies, with a serial bachelor in a provincial town, but it really exists. The only drawback, despite the owners' courtesy and hospitality, is the nearby church bell tower chiming the hours all night. Light sleepers should bring earplugs!
