Our two-bedroom, one-bath apartment had a roomy kitchen and living area, so it felt more like home than a hotel. The apartments sit in a separate building from the main winery on a spacious estate, which gave us privacy and quiet away from the tours and visitors. Each has its own entrance. The staff were exceptionally welcoming and attentive. There’s plenty of parking among the olive trees, as well as a pool, barbecue area, and beautiful panoramic views across the valley and vineyards. The sunsets were breathtaking. We also visited a nearby town’s farmers market and bought fresh ingredients for a classic Tuscan lunch in the courtyard, shaded by ancient trees. It felt like a movie scene. We took a wine tasting at the winery too, and the selection exceeded our expectations, with exceptional wines. It’s a great way to enjoy winery life without the work.

We first came in 2023 and returned in 2024. It’s a great value agriturismo, and the pool is the big draw, especially for kids. There are three shallower pools on one side and a full-length deeper one on the other, big enough for plenty of people. My kids, 7 and 4, love it. The 4-year-old can’t swim yet, but there are shallow areas where they can splash around. There’s space around the pool for sunbathing or shade. The apartments are comfortable and about what I expect from an agriturismo, fairly basic, but the beds are good and the bedrooms are bright and spacious, which hasn’t always been my experience. You don’t spend much time inside, and there’s everything you need. All the villas have outdoor seating, and numbers 5 and 6 have little gardens of their own. San Donato in Poggio is a 5-7 minute walk downhill, with a handy Co-op, pizza, and ice cream. We’d definitely return.

The location worked really well for visiting Florence, San Gimignano, Siena, and other charming Chianti villages. In San Donato there’s a small grocery shop, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants, while the large supermarket is 15km away. We stayed at La Papessa with our four young children. The house was clean, comfortable, and had all the equipment we needed. The agriturismo also has tennis and table tennis, a swimming pool renovated in May 2023, and a large barbecue area. You can arrange a tour and wine tasting at the property too.

The self-catering villette are ideal for families who want to relax and enjoy the beautiful area. The grounds are very well kept, and the pool is lovely. Don’t miss the BBQ area.
