Albergo Torre Sangiovanni

We only came for lunch, not an overnight stay. The setting is quite something, the wine selection is good, and the staff were enthusiastic. But the meal didn’t meet the solid Umbrian standard you find around here. The zucchini flowers were deep-fried in thick batter, which took away their usual delicacy. The pasta was decent. Both the venison and goose for the second course were overcooked, and I still can’t figure out the croutons on the plate, unless they were just decoration. The cheesecake was nothing special.

The old tower is nicely decorated in an old-fashioned style, and the staff are sweet. Most spoke little or no English, so we had to use Google Translate. We’d booked three days, but left after one night and checked into the fabulous Borgo Petroro. There was barely any outdoor space, just a tiny front garden facing the car park, despite the misleading photos online. It was full of mosquitoes, and my husband was bitten on all four limbs in five minutes. I know the rooms in a medieval place can’t really be changed, but on a lovely day you need somewhere outside to sit rather than just staying on the bed. Our family room was large but dark, and the bed was the hardest we’ve ever slept in. The restaurant was also in a small, dark room. Dinner was okay, though the venison was very tough, and breakfast was fairly basic. The tower is in a tiny hamlet miles outside Todi, and the surrounding area isn’t very attractive.

We stayed in beautiful accommodation in the Umbrian countryside, and everything felt relaxed and special. The food was fantastic, and the owners and staff were incredibly hospitable. Special mention to Dora, the Golden Retriever.

The food is spectacular, and everyone was so kind and welcoming. Dora, their sweet golden retriever, even greets you at the door. We’d recommend this place in a heartbeat.
