We skipped the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant after reading repeated complaints about the prices and service. Going into town turned out to be the best choice of our trip, and Ristorante Pizzeria Alla Grotta was an authentic, fun experience I’d recommend. The setting at Cape of Senses is beautiful, with Lake Garda views, landscaped grounds and outdoor pools. But our premium king suite didn’t feel like the five-star stay we expected for the price. The materials and finishes seemed lower quality than they should have, with vinyl and faux finishes where I’d expect stone or leather. To me, it was closer to four-star. Check-in was disorganized. Our room wasn’t ready at 2pm, we were sent to the wrong spa changing area and had to find our way, and nobody explained the stay details, including breakfast. That became an issue at checkout: staff insisted breakfast was included, though it hadn’t been mentioned at check-in or shown on our booking. They handled it dismissively. My complaint isn’t about the food or missing breakfast, it’s that the service didn’t feel five-star. The women at check-in need formal training in welcoming and accommodating guests, especially when they’re in the wrong. At this price, the front desk should deliver real five-star hospitality, and it didn’t. There was no air conditioning running, and our room was around 23°C in late April. Ants also came in when the terrace door was open. The location is stunning, but the service, execution and quality don’t justify the price or the five-star claim.

We felt welcome and relaxed as soon as we arrived. The staff were warm, attentive and thoughtful, and the bar team made each evening feel personal and fun. We loved the rain shower in our well-appointed room, and the spa was a highlight, with temperature-controlled pools and three different saunas. Meals throughout the property, from breakfast through dinner, were consistently delicious. Cape of Senses feels like an escape, yet it’s still about 30 minutes from the heart of Lake Garda. That mix of seclusion and access made our stay magical.

Most guests were German or Austrian, though all the staff spoke English too. We travel a lot and usually choose five-star hotels, and this was an especially lovely stay. The resort is only two years old, modern and contemporary, with high-end materials and little touches that stood out, from the cozy throw on the sofa to the first-rate bedding and quality ingredients at breakfast. It’s privately owned, and that seemed reflected in the very high level of service. Front desk supervisors Asia and Maria went out of their way to find the best available room and make our stay pleasant while we celebrated two very big dates. The valet and pool service were exceptionally nice, showing us the resort’s options, including its pools, pilates and yoga schedule, and special sauna treatments for the community. Asia and Maria even took time to look for a piece of plastic cover that had come off our rented Mercedes as we were leaving. All in all, I’d give this hotel five out of five.

The food suited us well, especially the meals at the lobby bar. We loved the rooftop restaurant too, but ate dinner in the lobby area on two nights for a more casual atmosphere and more typical Italian dishes. They were quick to bring warm gluten-free bread at every meal, which felt like a treat. Our room was impeccable, and I used the bath every night. A lovely way to end the day. The staff really made the stay. Laura answered all my emails about our food allergy, boating excursions and other questions. She was always helpful and responsive, welcomed us when we arrived, and helped arrange things that worked perfectly for us. On day one she also had the food and beverage manager meet with us to confirm our food needs wouldn’t be a problem. That had never happened for us before. Manuel from the restaurant and Michele from the lobby bar were wonderful too, as was everyone else we met. We especially enjoyed the boating excursion arranged through COS, the spa lounge during thunderstorms and the heated pools. The resort felt relaxed and welcoming despite being luxurious. We could wander as we liked, and the staff were attentive when needed while giving us space. They were friendly, had a sense of humor, and didn’t make us feel that there was a wrong choice about how to spend our time. The architecture is gorgeous, and every space felt special, from our room and the spa to the lounge, lobby and both restaurants. We flew into Milan, rented a car from Sixt and found the drive fairly easy. On arrival we were warmly greeted and offered a drink as we stepped onto the veranda to take in the landscape. This was our first trip to the lakes region, despite having visited Italy a dozen times. I agonized over which lake and hotel to choose, and Lake Garda seemed most our vibe, with gluten-free food available. Cape of Senses felt like the right atmosphere, and it turned out to feel like a little paradise. I have a couple of small suggestions. It wasn’t clear where or how we could travel in the company vehicles with a driver. We weren’t there long enough to want to explore much, but it would be good to know. It would also be nice if the main restaurant offered a few typical pasta dishes for nights when you don’t want a three-course meal. There were many gluten-free options compared with a typical resort, but it wasn’t always clear what was completely safe for celiac disease, especially at breakfast, so I stuck to the basics. A wider choice of baked goods than one a day would be nice. The guests were pleasant and interesting, a mix of couples, singles and families. People mostly kept to themselves and enjoyed the atmosphere. Around 25% were Americans while we were there, which was nice for the wider mix of people. Everyone was fluent in many languages, so there was no concern, and it was fun to practice Italian. We can’t wait to return to Cape of Senses for more reflection and relaxation. Thank you to the management and staff for an unforgettable stay. Candace & Brice
