The extra pet fee added at checkout left me disappointed, especially since I'd booked directly by email, clearly mentioned we'd be bringing a dog, and the quoted rate reflected that. When I raised the discrepancy, nobody acknowledged the confusion; I was told a discount had already been applied. The amount wasn't the point, it was how the issue was handled. For a five-star hotel, I expected more professionalism and care for the customer. There were many good things about the stay, including the beautiful property, spacious rooms, excellent restaurant, attentive service and breathtaking setting, but this is what I'll remember. Hospitality shows in how problems are dealt with, and this fell well short of what I expect from a five-star property.

The rooms are roomy and thoughtfully designed, mixing old and new styles, and the dehor is a lovely asset even in autumn. Staff are attentive and professional. This is a really lovely boutique hotel in an amazing location, and definitely somewhere to stay when visiting Trieste!

Our cruise ship couldn't help us find a taxi from the ship to the airport for 3am, but Sophia at your hotel assured us she could arrange one. We weren't even staying there, so the excellent service was especially appreciated. Thank you, Sophia, for making sure our trip ended smoothly, unlike our cruise ship!

The one good point was the woman at reception, who arranged a room change when I asked for one on the highest floor. Aside from the view over the big plazza, though, the room could have been in any basic 3-4-star hotel in Europe. The entrance and reception are small, dark and uninviting. The hotel feels outdated, tacky, rather basic and charmless, despite having Relais Châteaux recognition, which I don't understand. The café and breakfast area were the last straw: the cappuccino was the worst I've had, with mediocre taste and presentation and mushy foam, without even a cheerful design on top. Breakfast had a poor food selection. There's no spa, pool or gym, and the corridors are neglected, with wires hanging out. It's the costliest hotel in town, but nothing justifies the price. Its standard is more like a basic 3- to 4-star hotel. A big disappointment, and a rip-off.
