Hotel James Joyce

We were a group of four, two couples, staying one night in Trieste on our way to Venice, and the experience was miserable. The only offer after we raised our problems was $15 USD per couple toward an Uber to the train station, even though it cost $25USD each. We asked about a discount because all we really got was a room to sleep in and breakfast, without showers, but they refused. Breakfast was typical European fare, nothing special, and we had to rush through it to catch an early train. The problems started when we arrived. We were sent to a side building outside the hotel, where the elevator was so tiny it fit one person or two pieces of luggage. We hauled our bags up two floors. When we came back from an early dinner at 9:30, the hotel’s front lobby was locked and none of our keys opened the door. There was no hot water that night or the next morning, so we couldn’t shower. We thought perhaps the heaters were turned off after 9:00 p.m., but the water was still ice cold in the morning. We tried calling the front desk that evening and again in the morning, but neither phone in either room worked at all, with no dial tone and no working buttons. Guests need a way to report room problems in real time. We can’t recommend this hotel.
