Tropea City Hostel

The rooftop is pleasant, and you can eat there, but I wouldn't come back. The building feels abandoned as you go up through the houses. The rooms are kept in good condition and have air conditioning, though the blinds don't shut, so you have to sleep with the window open. The mattresses are saggy and worn, and the power went out several times a day. Management seemed disorganized, with reception almost always empty. It leaves a lot to be desired.

Arriving alone after dark to locked doors with nobody around and no way to reach anyone felt very unsafe. Nobody answered the bell or the listed number, despite my calling three times. I ended up booking an expensive hotel room for the night at short notice. More than an hour later, someone from the hostel finally contacted me and was extremely unfriendly because I hadn't waited that hour. This is a definite no-go, especially for solo travelers.

Reception is usually empty, so you may be left waiting or have to call. They only answer the Italian number. The lockers won't hold a suitcase, and security is almost nonexistent. There were cockroaches, and when I arrived there was no water. I'd give zero stars if I could. It's a horrible place. Look elsewhere, even if it costs a little more.

The terrace has a spectacular sunset, and the location is excellent, about a 10-minute walk from both the station and the sea. Great value for money.
