The grounds are lovely, and the breakfast team and younger man at reception were friendly and accommodating. The rest of our stay was deeply upsetting. We arrived Saturday night after exchanging a Marriott Son Antem week through Interval International. The manager, or owner as I assume he is, didn’t greet us. He pushed papers at us listing €50 for cleaning and €70 to use the pool, football pitch, which felt like a prison yard, and beach. We later learned the outdoor pool wasn’t heated and couldn’t be used, while the beach was closed. There’s an indoor pool, but that costs another €20 per person per day. When I asked if we could use it since the outdoor pool was unavailable, the manager waved his arms and slammed the papers down. The first room we were shown was dark, tiny, and looked out onto a hedge. I refused it, and a very nice younger receptionist found us a better one. They offered us dinner that night and a day at the spa for free, but we didn’t accept. In the room there was no WiFi or phone signal, and a 15-year-old Sky box. WiFi in the shared areas was unreliable too. By Tuesday, we couldn’t manage without phone or laptop access and couldn’t use the facilities, so we checked out after three of our seven days and had to pay extra to find somewhere else. My partner came back from checking out having been sworn at and spoken to aggressively, and €50 poorer for what seemed to be an imaginary cleaning fee. The manager was apparently very aggrieved that we wouldn’t pay the reduced €35 for facilities we hadn’t or couldn’t use. I’ve never felt so much like a second-class citizen or so uncomfortable. I don’t know whether it was because we’re English or because we booked through Interval International, but I’m in tears over what should have been a lovely holiday. Interval International shouldn’t offer this hotel as a comparable exchange, and off-season rates shouldn’t match high-season prices when so many facilities are unavailable. Be aware that everything costs extra, and if you do get to use the pool, remember to wear a swimming cap.

We spent most evenings heading out to explore the area, though the dining room had plenty of choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The beach shuttle was handy, and the weekly resort fee covered two chairs and an umbrella. The water was clear and shallow, cool enough to feel refreshing but still pleasantly warm. We also enjoyed a relaxing couples’ spa treatment and massage, then listened to music at the bar on most nights. We were pleasantly surprised by the accommodation, and even though we struggled with Italian, we connected with the lovely people working here. A good place for discovering and enjoying southern Italy.

A week here for my wife’s big birthday trip through Europe turned into a really memorable stay. Mery went above and beyond, even buying a few thoughtful things for the celebration. The wine and chocolates were perfect. Mr. Pierluigi and Mery were always around and glad to help, and the breakfast team, led by Ramona and Liza, were warm and professional every time we spoke. The barman was happy to bring hot water for afternoon tea. We were treated wonderfully from arrival through departure, and we’d certainly stay here again. Highly recommend it if you’re visiting the Apulia coast. It’s easy to reach sandy and rocky beaches, as well as the Adriatic and Ionian coastal towns and everything else southern Italy offers.

Best naps I’ve ever had, including one where I fell asleep beside the pool. We came here to relax and did exactly that. I’ve seen complaints about WiFi, but if you’re coming to Antica Masseria Rottacapozza for internet, you’re missing the point. The staff were attentive, helped with every request, and we drank our body weight in white wine. Dinner was decent, though we found better meals in town and while exploring the countryside. Breakfast was very European and a good value if you’re using the place as a home base. The location is beautiful, whether you want to set out from here or stay put. The nearby small town doesn’t offer much to see in the off season, and San Giovanni has better dinner options. Still, we had a great time. I didn’t want to go home.

The dinner was local, but we didn’t find it tasty, and breakfast was just okay. WiFi reached only a few spots, not our room, and the network connection was poor too. For a four-star hotel, having to pay for the pool in June-August felt disappointing.
