My wife and I stayed one night. The private room was quiet and had what we needed to recharge for the next day. Washing and drying are available, but they do it for you for $25. Drinking water was $5 per liter, like at mountain places. I understand supplies can cost more in hard-to-reach areas, but the road is right outside the rifugio, so the price felt hard to justify. It was like being at Dune, where water is worth gold. Dinner was good, no complaints, and there were “gluten free” options, but my wife still had cross contamination, so keep that in mind if you’re very sensitive. Breakfast was a huge letdown for a place costing about $300 per night. There was a small selection: yogurt, jams, cake, cheese, and coffee. No eggs, pastries, or much else. I expected at least eggs for that price. I expected a bit more from this place. I AM NOT ANGRY, I AM JUST DISAPPOINTED.

The three-course dinner was a highlight: pasta carbonara, a beef entree, and tiramisu. We booked a private room and were impressed with how spacious and clean it was. The bathrooms seemed newly renovated, with lots of hot water and strong pressure, much appreciated after a long hike. Passo Staulanza is on a common entry point for the AV1, so there’s more foot traffic during busy hours, but the staff handled the crowds attentively. I felt compelled to leave a positive five-star review, especially after reading the negative ones before we arrived. I’d recommend staying here.

This felt like an overflow place for finishing a chain of stays along Alta Via 1, rather than a first choice. The rate was the same as at higher-end places, but the amenities weren’t there. Getting to the rooms was difficult, cleanliness was questionable, and the food was mediocre compared with the other five places we stayed on the trek. Staff were accommodating, but seemed tired and weren’t friendly. Showers were hard to use, with no soap or shampoo and no space to change. A tall person would be lucky to stand up or fit into either of the two stalls. Anything beyond a bed and meal cost extra, when the advertised amenity was even available. Dinner options were limited compared with the other Alta Via 1 stays. Overall it lacked amenities, choice, attention to detail, and any effort to provide more than minimal accommodation. I’d look elsewhere first.

The hot showers had plenty of water, and our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Honestly, it was among the nicest places we stayed during years of traveling around Europe. The food was exceptional, with several gluten-free choices too. We'd been uneasy about this stop on our 10-day AV1 trek after reading all the harsh Google reviews. They didn't match our experience at all. It wasn't quite like the close-knit family huts farther along the trail, but we were very glad to stop here. The roadside location meant the staff were often busy, though they were friendly and helpful. The owner, who gets so many complaints in other reviews, was engaging, funny, and helpful. This was a fantastic midway stop for our tired bodies. The strange reviews needn't make you worry.

We stopped for drinks and snacks on the AV1 and sat outside, but the waitress didn't come over at all. We had to fetch the menu, place our order inside, and carry everything back to the table ourselves, even while she was serving other tables. The service was really poor. I wouldn't recommend stopping here.
