Hotel Conterie

Finding the hotel on arrival at the island was fairly easy. It was about a 20-minute walk from the airport shuttle boat. A friendly receptionist welcomed us, checked our passports, and explained that tourist tax was due at checkout. At the time of writing in 2025, it worked out to €3.50 per person per night. The hotel seems to have at least two sections. We went up some stairs, back outside, past the small breakfast room, and on to our two twin rooms. Room 16 faced the front, while Room 21 looked onto the terrace. Room 21 was bigger, but both were okay, with reasonably sized bathrooms and showers, no baths. Room 21 was very warm on the first night, and its air conditioning only blew warm air. Both rooms had air conditioning, though we didn’t try the one in Room 16. Breakfast was a small spread of cheese, rolls, yoghurt, small cakes, machine orange juice, and coffee made by the server. The first morning I asked reception about the air conditioning and got a shrug and, “Everyone else is warm as well!” Nice customer service. We were there in April, so I’m not sure I’d visit in summer. My tip: don’t have air conditioning if it doesn’t work.

I liked being in a quiet, more private-feeling part of Venice, away from the crowded spots. The hotel was peaceful at night and still in Venice, which suited me. There’s a backyard and a large balcony upstairs where you can sit for some fresh air without going far from your room. The room was tidy, with traditional Venetian decor, and the safety lock on the door made me feel secure in an emergency. Reception were great and happy to help with anything they could.

Our first stay on Murano was at Hotel Conterie in early September 2024, and I fell in love with the island. I loved the peaceful atmosphere and the bars where locals sit around chatting for ages. The hotel staff were all very nice and helpful. The room had nice Venetian-style furnishings, air conditioning, and a nice bathroom. Breakfast wasn’t especially generous, but it was enough for the price. I’d recommend staying here. Getting to the Vaporetto is easy, just take one shortcut and you’re at the Museo station on Murano.

It was a cheaper option, but the owner came across as rude. Maybe that’s just Italian hospitality in general, I guess. The woman at reception, though, was very polite. In the morning, when I went to make coffee for breakfast, the man helping there, possibly the owner, looked at me as if to say, “Why the hell did you come here?” Not the best way to run a hotel. I’ll avoid the place next time.
