Hotel Marconi

The location is hard to beat. We were beside Rialto Bridge, could walk around Venice easily, and had the waterbus stop just across the canal for trips to the train station or airport. Rooms were clean, the pillows comfortable, and the breakfast buffet each morning was decent. Service was excellent, especially Jerry, who helped carry our bags up to the fourth floor. For us, though, it was an okay stay and the location is what you're mostly paying for. There was no elevator, which made the stairs feel tough after a day of walking. That's something to weigh before booking, even if this is a historic Venetian building. Sleep was also disrupted by loud bursts from the air conditioning and thin walls. We could hear next door's conversations, plumbing, coughing and sneezing. The hallways and lobby had a strange smell, as if scented cleaning products were being used to cover it up. I'd perhaps book again if I had to, but would look at other places first.

The location was the one good point. We came from the US on a family vacation with two kids, and were shocked by the room size, cleanliness, service and general comfort. There was so much noise at night that we couldn't sleep well. I tried calling housekeeping for another pillow, but nobody picked up. People generally didn't greet us and seemed grumpy.

For the budget I had, I can't picture a better base in Venice. The location is central, so it's an easy walk to any part of the city. Staff were professional and knew their stuff, with great restaurant and transport suggestions when I asked. My room was spacious and immaculately clean, though it didn't look out over the water. I didn't find an elevator, but staff took care of my bags.

Such a nice little hotel, and right where you want to be when visiting from Australia. There is one odd thing, though, a very strong smell throughout, almost like Durian. Still, it's a nice place.
