The staff were amazing. They called to check whether we had caught the boat, waited so we could have dinner and check in, and shared great tips about the city. I loved the art exhibition, too. The huge bedroom was fully furnished in an old-fashioned style, and staying in a historic building made me feel like a princess. Such a lovely surprise, and a beautiful way to experience old-style Venezia.

A quiet spot in Cannaregio, with history and artwork all around. You can see the building's age, but to me that adds to the charm. Reception isn't staffed around the clock, though help is available by phone at any hour, even late. A very different kind of hotel for enjoying Venezia.

In a busy city full of visitors from all over the world year-round, this felt like a pleasant, quiet place to spend time with friends. You can get there by water bus along the Grand Canal and walk the rest of the way, or take a gondola to the main entrance. A nice bed and breakfast setup, and I'd recommend it.

We came to Ca Zanadia by water taxi on Tuesday 4 July 2017 to celebrate our anniversary. On arrival, we were left in a large dark room, then found Andrea in another dark room. She welcomed us, sat us at a table to check in, and gave us a city map with some areas pointed out. When I asked about breakfast the next morning, she said there was none. I'd paid €351 for three nights, plus €18 cash for city tax, so that surprised me. My wife was also disappointed to find a fully equipped kitchen and dining room that wasn't being used to make breakfast. Our top-floor room felt gloomy, with the old curtains kept closed, and the balcony didn't look like the website photos. That night, after dinner, we returned to a very dark courtyard with no lights and no staff on site. I believe we were the only guests in the hotel. If there had been a fire or something worse, how would anyone have raised the alarm? The next morning we couldn't find anyone until around 11. The place is in a sad state of repair. The eighteenth-century bed was held together with zip ties, and a chair had been glued back together. On Thursday evening we had to leave the terrace as it got dark because there was no lighting there either. It may once have been a palace, but it isn't now. From the canal it looks derelict, and the website photos don't show how it looks today.

A very Venetian room in an old palazzo that also has art exhibitions. San Marco is about a 26-minute walk away. Lovely.
