If you’re planning to visit St. Mark’s Basilica, it’s worth sorting out tickets beforehand. Booking online can help you avoid the long main queue. I’d choose the ticket that includes the museum and upper floor, since the balcony has a panoramic look over Saint Mark’s Square and you can get close to the bronze Horses of Saint Mark in the museum. There’s a lot to take in inside: gold mosaics across the vaulted ceilings, marble pillars, religious relics, and the jewel-covered Byzantine altarpiece known as the Pala d'Oro. The marble canopies and spiral columns around the main altar are intricately worked, and even the exterior arches have mosaics showing the basilica’s history.

We booked our tickets through GetYourGuide, which was convenient, and joined a tour of St. Mark's Basilica & Doge's Palace. The church looked phenomenal inside. Walking in, you could really feel its history and energy. What a beautiful place.

The museum ticket is well worth considering because it gets you upstairs, closer to the mosaics, and lets you see some of the renovations made over the years. You can also step out onto the roof for a view of the square. The Basilica is beautiful and sits beside the Doge’s palace. Audio guides are available, or you can take a tour for more information.

The interior is covered with about 8,000 square meters of mosaics, and the gold leaf set in glass catches the light differently through the day, giving the space a gentle shimmer. Details such as the Twelve Apostles are worked into the architecture itself. The Basilica’s history reaches back to its founding in 832, with rebuilding from 1063 onward. Its Italo-Byzantine design blends Gothic and Romanesque elements, and the five domes are unusual for a Western European church.

Being so close to the body of an apostle is an experience, for sure. Inside, the atmosphere felt deeply reverent and awe inspiring. I’d recommend getting the full pass: you can see St. Mark’s body, the architecture, the rooftop view over the square, and the upstairs museum, which holds artifacts that hadn’t been on public view for several hundred years. The basilica was phenomenal.
