Chatham Cottage

The privacy was a big part of why I loved it. We were right across from the beach and next to the Hip Strip, so I had the best time. I’ll definitely be back.

I wouldn’t recommend this rental. The only reason I gave it one star was that the owner refunded all our money; otherwise, I’d give it zero. I don’t agree with the positive reviews. There was no proper living area, just an old recliner and a chair near a window. The toilet had brown stains, the walls were dirty, and paint was chipped and peeling. Mold was on several walls in both rooms, which was a serious concern since my family member and I are extremely allergic to mold and mildew. A very large bug crawled around one bedroom and disappeared behind the AC unit, and I hate to think what might come out at night with the lights off. The yard had lots of dead leaves and foliage, and several bags of trash behind the house were visible through the kitchen window. The house in front of the “cottage” looked like a shack.

We’d stay again, probably in the bigger cottage. This one felt secure and private, with a small beach two minutes away and Doctors Beach about ten minutes away. Stores, restaurants, and a grocery store were also around ten minutes away. The main bedroom and bathroom were a good size, the kitchen had what we needed, and having a second bathroom was handy. The smaller bedroom only has a single bed, so it works for three people. The owner contacts you daily on WhatsApp. The cottage behind the main house was great overall, though the living area was small. My one minor gripe was the 20 black bags of trash behind the cottage, outside the kitchen window. They made the place feel less like paradise. Solid four stars, close to five.

The location is great and the staff were amazing. The owner was accommodating too. If the issues were taken care of, I’d rate this place four or five stars, but they weren’t. There were lots of cockroaches, about 2-3 inches long, and ants everywhere. The gas ran out, so we missed breakfast and lunch on our fourth day. The AC in one room never got fixed. Its remote was missing, and the room only cooled to 25C (77 farhenheit). The beds were exceptionally old, and after lying on one for a short while, the mattress had sunk by about an inch. The cottage wasn’t as advertised.
