Ammarin Bedouin Camp

For a place so far out, the location is great, just a short walk from Little Petra. It’s basic accommodation rather than luxury, but the rooms are comfortable. The shared bathrooms have very hot showers. Dinner was a decent buffet, though there was barely enough food, and I wish they’d made more. The dining tent felt cosy, and there was free hot tea.

The immense peace and quiet is what I remember most from our stay back in 2008. The tents were comfortable, the showers spotless and hot, and the food was delicious. Mohammed was our guide and host. His English wasn’t great, but he appreciated my attempts at Arabic and was a kind person. I’d love to return one day.

That wind felt like it could bring the mountains down, seriously. The tents held up well, though. Dinner was good, but the showers and bathrooms were dirty.

This is a warm, homely camp tucked among the Petra mountains. The tents come in sizes for two or four, and they’re sturdy and well made. It rained while we were in Jordan, but the tent stayed warm, and the sheets were pretty clean and well kept. There’s a shared area where everyone can sit and eat together. The people made it feel like home. We were there on our honeymoon, and the owner, Hussain, surprised us with a big honeymoon cake. He also demonstrated the traditional way to prepare coffee. He’s charismatic and funny, and knows how to bring people together. There’s a strong sense of community even with visitors from all sorts of countries. The Bedouins were among the sweetest, warmest people I’ve met. Breakfast is included, and kahwa keeps flowing. Everyone seems to drink plenty of it. Dinner has more choices, served buffet-style, and the food is great, mostly traditional Jordanian dishes. The rooms are clean and maintained. Don’t expect camp luxury, though the bathrooms are neat. Some locks need fixing, and soaps and tissues are replaced regularly. The camp owners don’t use plastic or plastic by-products, as it’s eco-friendly. If you’d rather skip a high-end luxury stay and experience Bedouin community life, this place is a good choice.
