Genji Koh

The outdoor onsen on the top floor had a great view of the beach, and our simple Japanese-Western style room was comfortable with a beautiful seaside view. The inn is about an hour’s drive from Nagoya, and well worth visiting. We seemed to be the only non-Japanese guests, but the staff were friendly and helpful, making an extra effort to explain everything in English. We also had some great conversations with the other guests, using our broken Japanese. We didn’t quite like having to wear the same slippers in the room and outside, which seemed unusual to us, but otherwise it was a highly enjoyable stay.

The staff were super kind and helpful, and the ryokan felt thoughtful and traditional. You can tell they care a lot about the guest experience. The onsen was my favorite part, so peaceful, with an ocean view and a lovely way to unwind after a long day. Genjikoh Ryokan (Genjikoh) in Minamichita, Aichi is right in front of the ocean, and the view from my room was absolutely stunning. It was a beautiful, relaxing stay. If you’re visiting Aichi and want a calm, scenic place with a real Japanese touch, I 100% recommend it. I’d love to come back someday!

I’d give it 3.5 stars if I could. The open-air baths and views from the 10th floor were beautiful, a 10/10. The location is right on the beach, with a surprising number of nice restaurants and cafes nearby if you have a car, so 8/10. The room itself was beautiful, spacious, and comfortable, an 8/10, but its phone didn’t work, so I had to make a few trips to reception. We were also surprised that nobody came to set up our futons in the evening, which has been the norm at every other ryokan we’ve visited. Service gets 6/10: some staff were exceptionally helpful and kind at check-in and when we left the parking lot, but one staff member was exceptionally rude and had zero interest in customer feedback. I wish I’d noted his name, but he was there when we checked out. Reserving a bath gets 4/10. It costs ¥3,300 for 45 minutes, which is a nice option for families, but there are no rotenburo, so you miss the amazing views. Prices in general get 5/10. The room price was quite reasonable, but food, massages, and reserved baths all felt a bit much. 40/60.

The hotel also has a shuttle bus from the train station, and it’s very recommended for people going to the airport the next day. I really had a great time here. The food, service, hot spring, and staff all satisfied me. Looking forward to coming here again.
