Tagoto

The local castle is a treat and close enough to walk to, especially for the mountain views from the top. The roads nearby are pretty narrow, but local drivers were considerate, so I had no trouble. I just finished a two-night stay, and it was wonderful. The landlady was kind and attentive, and the food was great. It's a very traditional building, and this was my first visit to a Ryōkan. It set a high bar for the rest of my trip.

It's a bit out of the way, with little around the hotel. The narrow streets nearby aren't suitable for walking, and you have to carry your bags up a couple of flights to reach your room. Several women run this delightful ryokan. The only man we saw was the chef. The building is a little old but well kept, and all the facilities worked. My wife and I enjoyed the hot bath together, which is quite rare. Breakfast and dinner were delicious and beautifully presented. Parking is in a lot beside the hotel.

The shops nearby are full of curios, and Tsuruga Castle is about a 30-minute walk away. Dr. Noguchi Street has a nice vibe if you take that route. I was traveling by bicycle, and the staff helped me store it inside. I spent two nights at this traditional ryokan, which serves a variety of Japanese dishes for breakfast and dinner. The food is amazing. Not having laundry on site was a small disappointment, but there's a coin laundry nearby, so it wasn't a big problem.
