A heads-up if you’re bringing a big suitcase: the stairs are narrow, and bags are stored outside the capsule, where they can take up space in the tight hallway. I managed the stairs without much trouble, but a smaller bag would fit better. The main capsule room has just four capsules, so that corridor is narrow. It’s only a practical warning, not a complaint. The hostel was spotless, and I saw staff coming in to tidy and replace things. One staff member even left me a kind note after changing my sheets. The place has a simple, elegant feel, and its small size makes it cozy. The staff were wonderful and helped make my stay in Amami lovely. The food was very good, too, with a good selection of shochu. I’d come back a hundred times. Be friendly with the staff and get to know people, the locals are a big part of what makes Amami such a wonderful place to visit.

I liked having a 24-hour common area on the second floor, and since I enjoy a drink, being close to Yanagawa Street was a real plus. I stayed in the dorm upstairs for two nights. The sleeping space was roomy and comfortable, and the stylish cafe is set in a white building. I got a welcome drink ticket and used it for an iced coffee. At checkout, they also gave me drip coffee to take away. The staff were kind and friendly, which felt like a reflection of the owner’s character. Before my stay, the email was garbled or didn’t arrive at all, lol, but the owner dealt with it quickly and politely. The booking system was at fault, not the hostel itself. I’d like to stay here again when I’m in Amami.
