The natural onsen, supplied by nearby hot springs, was the best part of our stay at Kameiso. Dinner was full of fresh seafood and made with seasonal local ingredients. We had a lovely two nights at this charming Japanese inn by the quiet river near Ashikita, south of Kumamoto. The rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated, though the older building means you can hear footsteps in the halls and other noises. One thing to plan for: local taxis aren't available after about 8pm.

The hot bath was clear, with a sulfur smell, and pleasantly warm rather than hot, so I could linger and relax. The spring water left my skin feeling moisturized. Beds are set up on the tatami, and both dinner and breakfast were really good. It's a welcoming family-run ryokan beside the river. There aren't restaurants nearby, so I'd book meals ahead. Walk-in use of the onsen is available too.
The full-course meal was a real highlight, especially the sashimi, which was among the freshest and tastiest I've had. The rooms also look lovely, mixing modern details with traditional Japanese design. There's a great in-house onsen, with separate public baths for men and women, plus a private bath you can reserve. Day use is available if you only want a hot spring soak. I'd recommend this place for a reasonably priced Japanese experience.
There are very few restaurants nearby, so getting around for food isn't especially convenient. Still, it makes for a quiet, refreshing break. The inn is small and welcoming, and the hot spring suited me well: it has a sulfur scent near the entrance and a mildly warm temperature that's relaxing if you don't enjoy very hot baths. You can reserve the family bath for an hour and soak in peace. The rooms look a little dated but are clean, and breakfast was just the right size. I had a very comfortable stay.
I came without meals and got complimentary snacks and water, a small touch that made me happy. The spring water was the main event for me. It was clear but felt thick, with chloride water clinging pleasantly to my skin. I barely noticed sulfur while bathing, though its scent was throughout the inn. The water was close to body temperature, so I could soak for ages and came out relaxed with smooth skin. I don't think a long soak would give me a hot spring rash. A private bath let me relax undisturbed. I hadn't planned to book one since I was alone, but I'm glad I did. The water was wonderful whatever I tried. An open-air bath would have been nice, though perhaps the water would be too cold outside. The inn was quiet, and I loved the distinctive spring water, which I don't think I've found elsewhere. I heard the food is good, so I'd like to try it next time.
