Dinner at Aso Hakuun Sanso was the highlight of our third day in Aso. After sightseeing, we checked into this peaceful place in the mountains, then had a lobster buffet with lots of seafood and local dishes. Horse intestine was on offer too, which definitely caught our attention, though most of us left it alone. After a cozy night, we started the next morning with a simple, filling breakfast that set us up for the day.

The onsen, pretty well kept grounds, and spacious, modern rooms made this my favourite hotel of our Kyushu trip. Everything felt new and clean, and housekeeping had clearly put thought into the amenities, right down to the soap and shampoo. Breakfast had a good range of food and the service was lovely. The staff were especially kind: they let me check in half an hour before 3 pm with a big smile, and the receptionist even wished me a happy birthday. I didn't catch her name, but she was a young Japanese-speaking woman working the afternoon of 16 December 2025, likely of South Asian ethnicity. It was peaceful during our stay, as there were no tour groups. I also enjoyed the sweet potato cookie they gave us as a welcome gift, and bought a box to take home as souvenirs. I'd like to try the family cottages on a return visit. Even with two kombinis nearby, there's not much to do at night. Dinner choices are limited unless you eat at the hotel's buffet or drive into Aso city.

The dinner buffet is well worth adding, especially for the attentive restaurant staff. Our western-Japanese style room was roomier than a standard one, and everything felt clean, cared for, and new rather than dated.

A good place to get away from the crowds. The rooms are spacious, parking is free for hotel guests, and the Japanese buffet food was fresh and delicious.

There isn't much nearby, so you'll need to drive out for food or sightseeing, but there's plenty of parking and the staff are friendly. I enjoyed waking up to the view from the window, and the public onsens were nice. They're separated by gender. Tattoos may be an issue when the baths are busy, since guests with tattoos are encouraged to leave then so others aren't offended.
