Ryokan Asono Yamaboushi

The food was a real highlight. Dinner at Ryokan Asono Yamaboushi was charcoal grilling, or charcoal barbecue, with fresh ingredients and delicious results. Homemade sake and grilled fresh fish were available for an extra charge. Breakfast was just as good, Japanese style, fresh, and beautifully arranged. Meals are served in the dining area of the main building. We chose a semi western-style room, with a Western bed and Japanese style everywhere else. The architecture and interior design were lovely, and the private baths were a treat. The outdoor onsen is wood heated, very hot, and only fits one person. It closes around 9pm. The indoor onsen is available anytime, has a comfortable temperature, and fits about two people. This was my first ryokan stay, and I’m glad we came. It was raining, but we had a rental car and got there without much trouble. The host welcomed us warmly and showed us around the room in detail. The family running the place were friendly and did their best to talk with us despite the language barrier. They made sure we had a good stay. The rain kept us from exploring the area, so I’m already looking forward to returning. I’d recommend it to anyone driving who wants to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan.

The staff were so friendly and helpful. I’d happily recommend staying here, especially for the private onsen. Dinner was fabulous, and breakfast was amazing too.

A great place for a genuine Japanese family experience. The hotel and restaurant were both great, and I’d highly recommend spending some time here.

We came to celebrate my wife's birthday, and I’d love to stay here again. The manager took a commemorative photo at checkout, which made us happy, but then my wife realized her ring was missing. The staff all helped search, and it turned up quickly. She’d felt the situation was hopeless, so having everyone pitch in was a real comfort. She says that kindness will stay with her as a cherished memory. Thank you so much. A few things could be better: the Goemon bath could have been hotter on a cold day, the bedrock room smelled a little moldy, and the sink faucet was loose and hard to use. An earlier breakfast would also make it easier to plan the next day. We enjoyed the home-style breakfast, the bedrock bath at just the right temperature, grinding our own coffee, snacks from Kyukodo, and relaxing at the kotatsu, which we don’t have at home. The inn offers the simple luxury of a soak in the quiet countryside and traditional homemade food at a fairly reasonable price.
