A traditional Japanese ryokan with a beautiful garden, good meals and relaxing spas. The rates are reasonable too. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a Japanese-style stay.

The room was clean and comfortable, though it wasn’t luxurious. The garden and ocean views made for a peaceful, relaxing stay, and the shuttle to and from Ajiro Station was handy. By train, it’s only a 15-minute local ride from Atami, and the morning shuttle meant I could leave after breakfast. The meals were delicious and generous. For around 20,000 yen, I was surprised to get sashimi, spiny lobster, abalone, shabu-shabu, and lobster, all seasoned really well. The hot spring water is drinkable and has a pH of 9.5. It’s described as an alkaline simple spring that supposedly has lotion-like effects, and it did leave my skin feeling silky. For good food and hot springs at a reasonable price, Shofuen is hard to beat. It felt like the best value and service I found in the Atami area. I’d recommend it for a quiet, relaxing getaway.

It feels like a long-awaited find. You can stroll through the garden and enjoy ocean views, and the water is drinkable too. It’s tasteless and odorless, much like drinking hot water, though it’s said to be good for your stomach and intestines. The spring has a pH of 9.5, which is unusual for this area, and my skin felt moisturized and smooth as soon as I soaked.
