The old details here stay with you. The paper screens between the bedrooms are more than 200 years old, and the temple has been in the hosts’ family for generations. Hearing its story and supporting them felt special. We spent two nights here at the end of 2025, and after a tour of the grounds I knew I wanted to propose in the private Bamboo Forest. It became the highlight of our trip. Masako-san and Koshin-San were so welcoming, and the service was amazing. They took our food allergies seriously, and every home-cooked meal was delicious. We had a huge private space, practically a whole apartment, with a spotless, brand-new bathroom. We also tried the traditional Japanese bath before bed. I slept better than I can remember. We rented a car and took our time around rural Ayabe in Kiyoto prefecture, driving past the rice fields and enjoying the scenery. Koshin-san also showed us how to make a traditional Japanese calligraphy “Goshuin stamp.” We framed it at home and will treasure it for the rest of our lives. This place means a lot to us. We’d gladly return.

The food may ask you to keep an open mind, but there was something to appreciate in every bite. You could tell it was prepared with care and love. Masako and the monk were very sweet and welcoming, and the activities were interesting. We enjoyed every minute of this authentic stay. The attention to detail was impeccable. Highly recommend. We only had a short stay, but the monk and his wife made every moment count. They treated us like family, and their kindness and teachings meant so much to me. My time with them changed me deeply, and I’ll always be grateful I got to stay there. Japan will stay with me, and so will this experience. The food was amazing, and the accommodations were clean, comfortable, and peaceful. Sending love from Canada, the Gabber family.

It was easy to reach the temple, and the hosts made us feel welcome right away. We learned a lot and loved being included in the morning service. Dinner was another memorable part of the stay, with so many things to try, and the plum wine cocktail was a big hit. This turned out to be the best experience of our Japan trip and went beyond what we’d hoped for.

We came with our daughters, and the monk cooked dinner for us. They even made a special menu for one of the girls. The service felt five-star, and the temple hotel was fabulous with a perfect host. One of my best experiences in Japan. We recommend it.
