Asami Guesthouse Tabimakura

During the long November weekend, with a famous Japanese musician’s live concert in town, Beppu hotels were nearly booked up or trying to charge double. I felt lucky to find an available room at Asami Guesthouse “Tabimakura”. Staying there was a pleasant surprise. It feels like a Japanese grandpa and grandma’s house, with an old but well-kept 70s Showa era style. It felt more like visiting relatives than staying at a guesthouse. Takayuki-san made me feel at home and shared excellent local tips, including many wonderful one coin, 100yen public spas within walking distance. There’s only one bathroom in the guesthouse, but after visiting several spas, that didn’t matter much. The heating kept my room warm, and I never felt cold in the evening. The house is in a quiet residential area, on a very quiet cul de sac. The nearby railway didn’t bother me. The alley can be hard to find after sunset, but the designated parking beside the railway was easy to find and available for a small fee on request. Cars can’t drive into the alley. If you’re after budget accommodation in Beppu and there’s a room available, I’d book it. I’m very confident you won’t regret it, and you’ll have an unforgettable experience.

The host was super helpful and resourceful. The place is basic, but clean and nice, with everything we needed, plus great heating and wifi. Google Maps can be off, so watch the directions. You have to walk around the houses to get in.
