GRAND BASE Iolani

The location is very good and the finishings are nice, but the cleanliness was below par. We found dust and debris, dirty kitchen drawers, and a very dirty sponge in the sink, so we had to buy a new one. There wasn't a drying rack for dishes or clothes. There are no curtains, so morning light comes in early. The shower head also had a very narrow spray and a needle-like stream, like showering with 10 water picks. It wasn't comfortable.

For a budget stay, this is a great option if you want more room than a tiny hotel room. Our apartment had three beds and was roomy enough for six, which felt extravagant for just the two of us. There was a kitchen with a stove but no oven, a fridge, microwave, and washer-dryer. It was also a fantastic price. The train station is only a three to five minute walk away. There are just two parking spaces, so we made sure to get back by 5pm each day and then walked around. That worked fine for us. In Beppu you might be looking for a hotel with its own onsen, but this little gem could change your mind. I'd recommend it to groups or anyone who wants a larger space.

We didn't see any staff or other guests, and there was no reception. Entry was by a pin sent ahead of time, then we checked in and got another pin for the room. It felt very tech-savvy. The beds were comfy, the kitchenette was tucked behind panels, and there was a washing machine, a huge TV with Netflix, Hulu and YouTube, free Wi-Fi, and a dining area. It's a spacious place, which is rare in Japan, and only about four minutes from the station and shops. Tucked among residential houses, it was quiet. The only drawback for me was the lack of curtains. The sliding Japanese panels kept people from seeing in, but didn't block much light. Still, I doubt I'll book anywhere else on our next visit to Beppu. It's only two stories, without the feel of a big tall hotel, but it was really good.

This beautiful place is one of my favorite stays anywhere in the world. It was spotless and lovely, and especially spacious by Japanese standards. There are only two parking spots, so getting one takes luck. The location can also be confusing because some streets are one-way.
