Hotel Shiragiku

The public areas feel a little dated, but they’re well maintained, and it’s an easy, accessible 10-minute walk from the station. Rooms are spacious, though there aren’t amenities supplied in the rooms, and bath towels are only available by the public baths. They offer free desserts from 3-5pm. Dinner was okay, and one of the outdoor public baths was very spacious.

The slippers and sandals actually fit my size 31cm feet, which made me ridiculously happy. Staff were warm and welcoming, and were glad to take pictures for us. The welcome drinks and appetizers were generous, and having tea, sochu, and pudding at night added to the stay. Both onsen were clean and pleasant. The main one, with a tree in the middle, was relaxing, while the cave one was fun for kids. I had dinner in my room, and breakfast came with a huge dessert table, which was great if you like sweets. I stayed one night in October 2022 and had a wonderful time. I’ve visited many Ryokans around Japan, and this one ranks among the best. I’d absolutely come back and recommend it to friends and family. Thanks to everyone at the Hotel Shiragiku for making the stay enjoyable.

Free parking is convenient, and there are complimentary drinks and an onsen inside. Breakfast is buffet style and tastes good. The receptionist was very good, too. It’s a nice place to stay in Beppu, opposite Beppu Park and within reach of many spots in the city center. The room has air conditioning but no heater, which you have to rent separately.

Dinner was better than expected, and I liked the buffet, especially the drink bar with some pretty decent bottles of French wine. The onsen doesn’t have a view, though, and the place felt a bit expensive for an old hotel from the early 90s.
