Kappo Ryokan Yumesaki

The three private onsens were great, and the room was really nice. The staff were kind too. We had an amazing stay. :)

The baths were spotless and very quiet, and the ryokan itself was neat and clean. We had a great overnight stay, with excellent, delicious meals at both dinner and breakfast. The staff were super friendly, and the private onsen facilities were excellent. We’ll definitely return on our next trip to Beppu. Highly recommended.

I had a good time at this family-style classic inn. I’ve visited Japan more than ten times and usually stayed at chain hotels like Ritz Carlton, Hotel Nikko, Imperial Hotel Tokyo, and The Okura Tokyo. I’d planned to book Sansou Murata in Yufuin, but Murata required at least two guests. As a solo traveler, I came across this inn online as an alternative, and they kindly accepted my two-night booking. The staff’s English was limited, but they made an effort to communicate and help me enjoy my stay. The young woman serving dinner taught me about things like Kabosu and kadomatsu. The inn is a bit removed from restaurants and sightseeing, so you’ll need a bus or taxi from Beppu station, or a walk of about 25 minutes. That distance also made it quiet. At night, seeing moonlight and stars reminded me of being a child. When the wind moved the garden leaves, their moonlit shadows fell into my room. It was relaxing, and I felt I’d found some inner peace. I wish I could have stayed longer. One small thing: I would’ve liked a regular chair in my room, maybe on the balcony. Sitting in Seiza for a long time was difficult. 😂

We took a taxi from central Beppu since the ryokan is a bit far from downtown. They can call one for you, and it was about ¥1000 each way. The people there don’t speak much English, so Google Translator worked well for us. The hosts were friendly and professional, and everything was very clean. The food and baths were great, and it felt worth the money. I didn’t think a private bath in the room was necessary, since the communal bath was spacious and we didn’t run into anyone. I’d love to come back.
