Seaside Hotel Mimatsu Oetei

The hot springs had lovely views of both the ocean and mountains, and the food exceeded what we expected. The tatami was comfortable, and the staff were very professional. This was one of the best stays I’ve had anywhere, and the hotel offered excellent value. I’d recommend it to anyone coming to Buppa. Hope I can come back soon!

The evening pianist playing Ghibli songs was a lovely touch. I also really enjoyed the tasty, good-quality food, and the staff were absolutely top notch. The building and rooms look a little dated, but everything was clean and well cared for. This was the only place in Beppu I could find with hot springs that would let a solo traveler book for my dates. I’d come back.

We had a great time together as a family at the nightly music concerts. The pianist and violinist played beautiful Ghibli pieces, and the free performances exceeded my expectations. I also loved the rooftop onsen, where I got to see both a starry night and the sunrise in this part of southern Japan. The dining was another highlight, especially the oversized sashimi and premium beef. This hotel felt quite different from the other resort-style places I’ve stayed.

Parking was easy and convenient, and the room had a huge, unobstructed view of the sea. It wasn’t the biggest room, but it was enough, and it was sparkling clean despite the building seeming older. The food was fine for the price, though not the best. The public baths were the one part that fell short: they felt a little small, and from inside the rooftop open-air bath there wasn’t much of a view. You could see the open sea only when standing outside the bath, probably because nearby buildings make privacy an issue.
