SEKIYA RESORT Terrace Midoubaru

The views are lovely, and the meal plan was worth it for both dinner and breakfast. Having an onsen in the room is nice too. But for what we paid, the room was more worn than I expected. The design is great, and must have looked wonderful when it first opened, but there was mold and staining around the bathroom sink, and some of the bath area wall was peeling. The staff are nice, though communication gets a bit difficult when no foreign staff are around. If you're driving a rental car, don't count on the GPS to take you to the right place. Google Maps works, but the route is very narrow and a little tricky, so check it before you go.

This modern onsen resort is tucked away in the hills of Beppu. The hospitality was great, the room was comfortable, the food was amazing, and the view of Beppu's steam chimneys was beautiful. I especially liked having a private onsen in the room. As a foreigner, I find going to a public bath quite uncomfortable. Soaking here was relaxing and helped with the fatigue I'd built up during the trip. I'd highly recommend staying a night.

The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the room was nice, spacious, and well furnished. The car park had enough spaces for the number of rooms. The open-air bath is clearly a big reason to come here, but our enjoyment of it was reduced by the view. For the price we paid, we were incredibly disappointed. It seems two rooms have their views blocked by the roof of the shared rooms, and we were assigned one of them despite paying the same as guests in rooms with better views.

We stayed at Sekiya Resort Terrace Midoubaru from Oct. 1 to Oct. 4, 2025, and it was a wonderful visit. The people were so kind and helpful, especially Maria-san and Korogi-san, who went above and beyond to arrange transportation and special accommodations for our group of seven people aged 70-85. We really appreciated all the staff. The resort blended a traditional ryokan feel with modern style. Our spacious room had a simple, beautiful design, and we loved the seaside view and private onsen. The bathrobes and linens felt luxurious, and wearing yukatas to dinner was fun. The locally sourced meals were special, beautifully presented, delicious, and well explained. We also enjoyed the massage service. Thank you so much!
