The hotel is old but clean and charming, and it was great value. We checked in early during the World Cup rugby weekend and left our bags, then got back around midnight. Although the bath was meant to be closed, they let us use it, which was fantastic. We skipped breakfast, but there was cake, green tea, and hot water in the room. The staff were friendly and helpful. They didn't speak English, but we managed to communicate. The location is convenient, with a nearby bus station for getting around Beppu, including to the train station. We'd stay here again.

A great way to experience a traditional Japanese ryokan. The food courses were very good, and the onsen needs to be reserved ahead, though it usually isn't busy. The location in this small town makes it easy to get to other sights. Meal times are strict, so I felt a bit rushed at dinner and breakfast. You'll need to speak Japanese, and they only take cash.

Really nice Japanese-style stay 👍, with a natural onsen.

The meals were a real highlight, and I could have them brought to my room even though I was traveling alone. They used lots of Oita ingredients, served in portions that let me try a range of local dishes. The Oita Wagyu sirloin was especially delicious. There was plenty of food, and I was full, but I still finished the rich hell-steamed pudding. Breakfast was huge too, with hell-steamed eggs, grilled fish, chilled tofu, frankfurters, and more than I could finish. The inn has an old-fashioned ryokan feel. At check-in, a waitress, or maybe the proprietress, brought tea and sweets and showed me to my room. All the rooms are Japanese-style, which felt nostalgic to me, and there were massage chairs as well. The baths use natural hot spring water. There are two private indoor baths and one open-air bath, and both types were a comfortable temperature, around 40°C. I stayed here alone for the first time at Beppu Onsen, and I'd definitely choose this ryokan again if I return to Oita.
