Getting here is awkward, so having a car helps. If you’re looking to get away for a while, though, the area is lovely for hiking, especially in spring and fall when the azaleas and koyo are out. There’s a Finnish-style sauna, and you can bring your own swimsuit or rent one there. I tried the deer "hambagu" and found it a really interesting meal. The staff were friendly and helpful, and I felt comfortable chatting with them in Japanese. A nice retreat from a hectic schedule 😁

The dinner and breakfast were both great, and the staff were lovely, approachable people who were happy to help or have a chat. Our room was neat and clean, with a super comfortable bed. The building has loads of charm, an old place tucked deep in the bush. I loved staying here. Thanks so much, guys!

Out in the middle of nowhere, which makes it a great base for hiking in the famous mountains nearby. Such an awesome place.

We stayed overnight before hiking Mt Sobo. The lodge had a laid-back feel, with lots of artsy pictures, and the staff were kind and attentive. Both the deer burger and lamb mince meat meal were delicious, especially with one of the beers on offer. Just check bus schedules carefully: buses only run on weekdays, and on weekends you need to reserve a taxi in advance for pickup and return between ogata station and lamp bungohno.

It’s a gorgeous, cozy wooden building that used to be a school, with a fireplace, baths, and really good food. The location works well as a base for hikes and treks nearby. Getting there takes some effort, though, about a 1-2 hour drive along narrow, winding highway 7.
