The private baths were a nice option if you’d rather not use a public one. You just flip the sign to show it’s occupied, and other guests leave you in peace. I visited in June, though I imagine the forested hills look lovely in fall, especially from the outdoor bath. The inn itself is tucked into the trees, with friendly staff and nice hot springs. Dinner came on beautiful plates, a generous series of local dishes like whole grilled fish, sashimi, miso potatoes and miso konnyaku, plus a few French touches, including potato soup.

Dinner was the highlight for us. They served it in our room, with a pot of boar meat and local vegetables, and there was more than we could finish. The mountain setting is lovely, though the view from our room wasn’t anything special. If you want a ryokan fairly close to Tokyo with really good food, this seems like a solid option.

We had a great family vacation here. The private hot spring bath was especially nice, and the river fish at dinner was tasty, roasted with salt.

We went with my parents, and they were very happy with how warmly everyone treated us. The staff were kind throughout, and their hospitality really stood out. The building is old, but it’s kept very clean and in good condition. We enjoyed the plentiful food, and the hot springs were clean and just the right temperature. We only stayed one night, but I’d happily return, even though I don’t usually revisit the same inn. Thanks for taking such good care of us.
