We stayed one night at the end of the year with our 2-year-old, so these are my thoughts as a parent. The kids' room was a real help for passing the time. It’s spacious and simple, but having a place like that makes a big difference. It’s on the second floor in what used to be a banquet hall, in the same space as the ping-pong table. Since you take your shoes off at the entrance, shoes aren’t allowed inside. Kids’ slippers are available, though I thought socks or bare feet were fine too. A few things were less convenient. We expected to share our meals with our child, but there wasn’t much to share, and the portions for adults were huge, just as other reviews mentioned. If your child eats regular portions, I’d suggest choosing the plan with a children’s menu. High chairs, kids’ cutlery, and straws are provided. The shop has souvenirs, but no bread or rice balls for snacks, and it doesn’t sell alcohol. Maybe there’s some in a vending machine somewhere. There were only two hair dryers in the large bath, one each in the men’s and women’s areas, and they barely blew any air. Waiting after a bath could leave you cold. It’s better to towel-dry your hair well and use the dryer in your room. I wish they’d add more dryers or replace them with stronger ones. The front desk is on the third floor, as are some guest rooms; the rest are on the fourth. There are several luggage carts at reception, but steps along the way to the rooms at the back mean you can’t roll a cart all the way there. You have to carry your things up the stairs, which was a bit of a hassle.

The historic Showa Hotel was once used by the former Emperor and Empress. Tokyo private junior and senior high schools often use it for training camps.

We stayed for two nights of skiing, and the hotel’s spot halfway up the slope was ideal. Being able to ski straight out from the hotel was great, and the roads were well maintained, which felt reassuring. The food was good too.

The large public bath was noisy, with lots of families and young children. There was also a strong chlorine smell, even though a lot of chlorine is added to the water, and it felt like too much for the kids. The location is very convenient, right next to Royal Hill ski resort, with direct access to the slopes from the drying room. Ski rentals are well equipped, probably the best in the area. The building is old, but the rooms are looked after and comfortable. The heating worked well, and the toilets had bidets this year, unlike last year. Meals are a generous kaiseki course with plenty of dishes, though the menu was almost the same as last year, so it may not change much. Staff service was average, and I had no unpleasant experiences. It’s an adequate level for a hotel in the countryside. All in all, I found it a comfortable place to stay.

I’d happily have the grilled salmon again. The breakfast had lots of side dishes that went well with the freshly cooked rice. I especially liked the simmered hijiki seaweed, tofu salad, grated daikon with dried sardines, and fried eggplant with miso dressing.
