The meal was delicious, and I was impressed by the quality of the ryokan. We had sashimi, boiled fish, grilled dishes, rock oysters, chawanmushi, and more. It was the middle day of a three-day weekend in summer, yet we were the only guests. I guess winter is the busy time, since that’s crab season. As we left, I asked about crab season and was told that November to December is generally full because guests from the previous year book again when they check out. I’d still like to come back then sometime.

Dinner and breakfast were luxurious, beautifully presented, delicious, and served piping hot and fresh. The service was perfect. My only suggestion is that having a menu would make things even better. It was our first trip to Fukui, a one-night family stay on August 13th. The proprietress greeted us as soon as we arrived. There was an air conditioning issue in our reserved room, so they moved us to a special room, which was incredibly beautiful. We’d like to visit during crab season next time.

The crab course was fantastic, though pricey. That Echizen crab was the best I’ve ever tasted, and it was so large I couldn’t finish it.

There was so much food I couldn’t finish it all. I saved the crab hotpot for breakfast the next morning, and both the Echizen crab and Seiko crab were the best.

I’ve been going for years, but I may finally stop soon. The food quality has gone downhill year after year while the prices have become shockingly high. The rooms aren’t very good, and for a ryokan that specializes in cuisine, the meals aren’t filling. It used to be incredibly fresh, plentiful, and delicious, probably because they went fishing themselves. Since the kind-hearted proprietress retired and the younger proprietress took over, the quality has plummeted. I definitely wouldn’t recommend coming for the food. If you’re going to the nearby beach, it’s close and convenient, but far too expensive for that purpose. I imagine a lot of long-time visitors are staying away.
