Hotel Kusakabe Armeria

The hotel isn't new, but it's well maintained and clean. Staff were attentive, friendly and helpful, and most could communicate in English, which made things easy for foreign guests. There's a wide selection at the buffet dinner. It felt like a good place to relax and recharge, and good value for money. I strongly recommend it for a Japanese hot spring experience.

We had a clean, peaceful ride on the shuttle bus from the train station. The onsen was another excellent choice. Both buffet meals, breakfast and dinner, had a really good selection of dishes.

The kaiseki dinner was a real highlight, with every dish beautifully prepared and full of seasonal flavors. I also loved relaxing in the natural hot springs, especially the outdoor rotenburo in the fresh mountain air. My room was spacious, spotless and done in traditional Japanese style, with tatami mats and a gorgeous view of the mountains and river. From the moment I arrived, the staff treated me warmly. They were kind, attentive and always ready to help, and made me feel at home. I had a truly unforgettable stay at a Gero Onsen hotel. It would suit a romantic getaway, a cultural experience or a chance to relax, and I can't wait to return.

The room's cleanliness was a real disappointment, especially given the price. There was a lot of dust, and the bathroom had mold everywhere. The hotel is historic, old and compact, with a charming atmosphere, and many things still work. But the shower curtain and rail were thick with mold. Replacing them seems like a simple, inexpensive fix, and I couldn't help wondering how long they had been left there to get so bad. It was disturbing. I'd suggest looking at nearby hotels that pay more attention to cleanliness for a holiday stay.
