Kawakamiya Kasuitei

This was the best hotel stay I’ve ever had. The rooms were very large and finished to a high standard. The onsen was clean and amazing, with hardly anyone around. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, served in private rooms, and there was a massage chair available. The staff were so friendly. It all felt authentic, and I can’t recommend it enough. Gero itself is lovely and worth visiting too.

I’m already missing this place. The service was impeccable, everything was well cared for, and the food was amazing. Loved the whole stay, from arriving to leaving, and I’d absolutely choose it again if I return to Gero.

We arrived on a day of heavy snowfall and got lost near the ryokan. I called, and although the staff tried to explain the way, the poor visibility and the fact that we weren’t local meant we still couldn’t find it. In the end, a staff member came out and guided us there. That was my first impression, and they were just as kind after that. They were lovely with the children and had slippers and yukata in kids’ sizes ready for them. Our room was clean, well equipped, and evenly heated, without a cold bathroom or toilet like I’ve felt in some hotels. The amenities were good quality. I especially liked the almond oil bath gel because it left my skin feeling moisturized. The hot spring ran a little hot, though I understand that natural water can be hard to control. Soaking in it didn’t leave my skin dry or prickly. We chose the wagyu A5 set, and the food was very good. The next morning, they’d cleared the snow off our car before we came out.
