The $432 half-board stay put me in a superior twin at RITA Goshomachi, a former 1918 fountain pen shop. There are just four rooms there, and mine had a garden courtyard view with 732 sq ft of space. RITA takes its name from the idea of heritage, with a goal of bringing derelict spaces in the old town back to life. Another option is Yado Charinko, once a bike shop, now rooms with shared bathrooms. The hotel uses four Showa-era buildings spread around town for lodging, meals, and the sento. Gose Takarayu first opened in 1916, shut in 2008, then reopened in 2022. Breakfast and lunch are served at Kemuri, and the A+ restaurant two minutes away gets rave reviews too. Gose has a nostalgic feel, like stepping into a less explored Edo-period temple and merchant town. There are temples, shrines, and public baths to explore around Katsuragi. By chance, I was there on the autumn festival night, when the lantern offerings at Kamotsuba Shrine felt hypnotic and dreamlike. 5/5.

At night the village felt cinematic, and bathing near the locals is an experience I'll remember. This was a unique stay on our trip. Thank you!

The dinner was delicious, even though getting to the place for it wasn't convenient. Service was excellent, too. The building used to be a pen shop, and there are lots of old-fashioned pens on display. From outside it still looks old, while inside most of the rooms have been renovated and some traces of the past remain throughout. Highly recommended.

The staff were so friendly and helpful. This lovely boutique hotel is in a former fountain pen factory, and Gose is definitely worth a visit.

The public bath was only a minute's walk away, and our 3-year-old could use it for free. He really enjoyed it. We also had a French course meal with him at the affiliated restaurant, which left us very satisfied. We stayed for two days and one night with our child, and both the room atmosphere and service were great. It was a lovely inn, and I'd like to stay again if I get the chance.
