The display doesn’t cost anything to enter, which was a nice surprise. After a wonderful dinner, we walked over to Tokino Sumika Illumination Japan, and it made for a memorable winter evening. Tokino Sumika has a nostalgic, fairytale atmosphere, with European-style architecture set against the natural scenery and Mount Fuji. The lights stretch across a wide area in tunnels, sculptures, and detailed patterns. The Rainbow Tunnel was especially mesmerizing, all those colors changing around you. There are also plenty of illuminated features that sync with music, creating a panoramic scene. It’s an unusual thing to experience in Japan, especially in the months leading into winter. The displays combine technology and artistic design, and the light placement feels carefully worked into the surroundings. It brought warmth and joy to a cold night.

Seeing Mount Fuji behind the lights made the whole place even more beautiful, and there’s a one-day onsen if you want to unwind after walking around. The winter display feels magical, with a tunnel whose sections each have their own theme, plus interactive features and kaleidoscope moments that would suit couples or families. I wasn’t sure what this would be like, since someone had only called it a “tunnel.” It turned out to be a series of themed light displays in the tunnel area, plus other sections to explore. Really great experience. Worth checking out.

We’ve been coming to Gotenba regularly since 2008, and our family has stayed at the Tokinosumika resort several times. Over the years we’ve watched the illumination grow from a small display and improve a lot. It’s beautiful and gives the area a romantic feel. The display runs longer than most places, and there’s even a summer version through the end of August. There’s lots to do in the area during the day too, especially for kids, so it’s worth visiting then as well. Plenty of places to eat, though the restaurants tend to shut early, around 8 or 9 pm.
