Unlike modern hotels, ryokan reflect traditional Japanese culture and ways of life. They’re Japanese-style inns, often found in hot spring areas or traditional destinations such as Kyoto, Hakone, and Takayama.

I made a reservation, then was asked to cancel because the number of guests had changed. When I tried to cancel and book again, everything was full. I asked for help and expected them to accommodate me, but they lied. This left me feeling that the hotel is dishonest. The worst.

There’s no bath or toilet in the room, and the gap between the accommodation’s description and what I found was significant. The shared bath for men and women felt like too much, especially since many people seem to use the place for business. I was also given two futons despite staying alone, and they’d been laid out even though I wasn’t using them. I worried someone else might have slept in them.

I won’t stay here again. The room was just old tatami, with no bath or toilet, and there was no toothpaste. Guests had to take turns using the bath. At 7am, while I was brushing my teeth in the bathroom, the cleaning lady came into my room. What a ridiculous time. What if I’d been asleep? Then when I got home from work, nothing had been cleaned. The futon and trash can were still there. Why had she even been in the room?
